Research

Our expertise

Hereford & Worcester Gardens Trust have always been very aware that essential background research is vital when considering the many aspects of historic parks and gardens. Making informed comments about planning applications, giving advice to garden owners, arranging visits and lectures, investigating the potential for grant aid, they would all founder if not backed up by a thorough understanding of the site.

Kyre park for websiteWe have therefore concentrated much of our efforts in researching the 530 historic parks and gardens that we know of within the two counties. The results have been two hardback books. A Survey of Historic Parks & Garden in Herefordshire published in 2001 and A Survey of Historic Parks and Gardens in Worcestershire published in 2019. We also published a smaller volume of Walled Gardens of Herefordshire in 2009. The biannual newsletters also contain much briefer ad hoc research results. For more details of these publications go to our Publications page.

We obviously know a great deal about the parks and gardens in our counties but we are very aware that much more detailed research could be done. We are hoping that future research projects can be undertaken by volunteers and then published as occasional papers.
